Cardboard Heart

This is what I’ve been busy with all winter – a poetry sitcom for Radio 4. We’ll be recording it on the 9th and 10th of March at the Drill Hall – tickets are free here. It’s directed by Pia Furtado, produced by Ben Worsfield, fantastic cast.

We go out on Thursday nights from August 13th, so that’s the 13th, 20th and 27th of August and September 3rd at 11 pm. We’ll be on iPlayer too.

RICHARD MARSH: CARDBOARD HEART

Join award winning writer and performer Richard Marsh for his brand new Radio 4 sitcom.

Richard is the writer and star of Love and Sweets, a BBC Radio 4 comedy series that won Best Comedy in the BBC Audio Drama awards 2014. His play Dirty Great Love Story (co-written with Katie Bonna) won a Fringe First award for outstanding new writing at the Edinburgh festival, and his most recent play, Wingman, was another critically acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe smash hit.

Now, in Cardboard Heart, Richard plays Will, an aspiring writer and hapless romantic who’s keen to find love, with a 9 to 5 job writing poetry for a greetings card company.

Paid to express heartfelt emotions for people he will never meet, Will consistently fails to express himself properly to anyone he does meet. Every social interaction is a minefield for Will. In his head, he knows exactly what to say – but the minute he opens his mouth, it’s a disaster. Luckily for you, Will shares his inner thoughts with the audience…

Will shares an office with Goadsby – she’s responsible for the card artwork, and being Will’s nemesis; Colin, the firm’s safety and survival-obsessed accountant, and charming renegade salesman Beast. Beast takes every opportunity to make fun of Will – and gets a lot of opportunities, being Will’s flatmate. Cast TBC.

Richard is a magnetic and charming performer, slipping from rhyme to prose and back again in a fast-paced, accessible way – at times hilarious, at others heart-breaking. Think David Sedaris crossed with Jay-Z. But from Somerset.
